A week-long Community Outreach Programme organised by the Municipal Committee Leh began on March 9, 2026, at the Community Hall in Chubi Yangrtsey in Leh.
The programme covers the areas of Sankar, Chubi, Changspa, and Karzoo and aims to strengthen coordination between the municipal authorities and residents while spreading awareness about civic services and responsibilities.
Officials and Community Members Attend Launch
The event began with a welcome address by Nambardar Nawang Tsering, who welcomed Executive Officer Stanzin Rabgais and other departmental officials with traditional khataks.
Residents, community representatives, Gobas, and local stakeholders from the area also participated in the programme.
Focus on Public Awareness and Civic Responsibility
Addressing the gathering, Executive Officer Stanzin Rabgais explained the objectives of the outreach initiative and stressed the importance of bridging the gap between citizens and the Municipal Committee.
He highlighted the need to maintain cleanliness in Leh Town and emphasised that both the public and government officials share responsibility for ensuring effective civic management.
Waste Management and Sanitation Measures
During the interaction session, officials discussed key municipal services, including waste collection systems and sanitation services.
The Executive Officer informed residents that starting April 2026, the Municipal Committee will deploy waste collection vehicles twice a week across Leh Town.
Households will be required to pay a nominal user charge of ₹100 per month for waste management services.
Officials also encouraged residents to use dustbins properly and cooperate with sanitation staff to maintain cleanliness in the town.
Building Construction to Require Municipal Approval
Authorities also announced that prior permission from the Municipal Committee Leh will be mandatory for any building construction within Leh Town.
Residents will need to submit their applications through an online system and obtain approval before starting construction work.
This measure aims to ensure planned urban development and compliance with municipal regulations.
Key Issues Raised by Residents
During the interaction session, residents raised several local issues, including:
- Shortage of drinking water
- Concerns related to the Jal Jeevan Mission
- Problems caused by stray animals and dogs
- Road infrastructure and construction-related concerns
Officials assured the community that the issues would be addressed through coordination with relevant departments.
Outreach Programme to Cover 21 Wards
The community outreach campaign will continue across 21 wards of Leh Town from March 9 to March 14, 2026.
Officials said the initiative aims to increase awareness about municipal services, strengthen civic engagement, and encourage active participation from residents in improving local infrastructure and governance.
