Dog Disease Outbreak Reported in Zanskar, Animal Husbandry Department Launches Containment Measures

Kargil: A sudden disease outbreak has been reported among dogs in several villages of the Zanskar Sub-Division in Kargil district, prompting immediate response from the Animal Husbandry Department.

According to officials, affected dogs are showing clinical symptoms such as conjunctivitis, excessive salivation, purulent nasal discharge, vomiting, and diarrhoea.


Immediate Action by Animal Husbandry Authorities

Following a report submitted by the Livestock Development Officer (LDO), Zanskar, the office of the Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil swiftly initiated preventive and containment measures.

A team led by the Disease Investigation Officer (DIO), Kargil has been deployed to the affected areas to conduct field investigations, collect samples, and carry out laboratory confirmation of the disease.

Treatment of affected dogs is currently underway under the supervision of the LDO, Zanskar. The department has also launched awareness campaigns in villages to inform residents about precautionary measures and responsible animal handling practices.

Officials confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored and necessary steps are being implemented to prevent further spread.


Public Advisory Issued for Residents

The Animal Husbandry Department has issued the following safety guidelines for the public:

  • Avoid direct contact with sick or stray dogs.
  • Immediately report any dog showing abnormal behaviour or illness to the nearest veterinary centre.
  • Ensure children do not play with sick or stray animals.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling animals.
  • Isolate sick animals and prevent them from roaming freely.
  • In case of a dog bite or scratch, wash the wound immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention at the nearest health facility.

Authorities Urge Public Not to Panic

Officials have urged residents not to panic, assuring that the outbreak is under active management. They emphasized that containment protocols, medical treatment, and awareness drives are being carried out to safeguard both animal and public health.

Further updates are expected after laboratory confirmation and assessment of the disease pattern in the affected villages of Zanskar.
