Leh: The Department of Horticulture Leh organised farmers’ training programmes on pruning and pest management of orchards in Dhomkhar and Lamayuru villages of the Khaltse zone to strengthen farmers’ knowledge of scientific orchard management practices.
The initiative aimed to improve the productivity and health of fruit orchards while promoting sustainable horticulture practices in the region.
Strong Participation from Local Farmers
The training programmes saw enthusiastic participation from around 160 villagers, including local farmers and orchard owners from the surrounding areas.
During the sessions, experts focused on:
- Proper pruning techniques for fruit trees
- Pest and disease management
- Orchard sanitation and maintenance
These practices are essential for enhancing fruit yield and maintaining orchard health.
Officials Interact with Farmers
The programme was attended by Chief Horticulture Officer Leh, Kunzang Wangmo, along with Incharge Horticulture Development Officer, Khaltse, Kunzes Angmo.
During the sessions, the officers interacted with farmers and highlighted the importance of adopting scientific horticulture practices to improve production and ensure sustainable orchard development.
Practical Demonstration on Pruning Techniques
As part of the programme, field demonstrations were conducted to teach proper pruning techniques.
Farmers were shown the correct methods of pruning fruit trees and controlling orchard pests, enabling them to apply these techniques effectively in their own orchards.
Awareness About Government Schemes
Officials also informed farmers about various horticulture development schemes being implemented by the department.
Participants were encouraged to take advantage of these schemes to improve their orchards and increase productivity.
Farmers Appreciate the Initiative
Farmers appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of Horticulture Leh and actively participated in the discussions and demonstrations.
The department reiterated its commitment to organising more capacity-building programmes in the future to strengthen the horticulture sector and support farmers’ livelihoods in Ladakh.
