New Delhi: In a major step toward digital transformation and innovation, Indian Railways has announced two significant reforms under its ‘52 Reforms in 52 Weeks’ initiative. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the new Rail Tech Policy and the fully online e-RCT (Railway Claims Tribunal) system, aiming to modernise railway services and enhance transparency.
These initiatives are designed to promote cutting-edge technology adoption while simplifying the claims settlement process for passengers.
Rail Tech Policy: Driving Innovation in Railways
The newly launched Rail Tech Policy introduces a dedicated RailTech Portal, creating a direct link between Indian Railways and startups, innovators, research institutions, and industry players.
Through this platform, individuals and companies can submit technology proposals digitally. The selection process has been streamlined, and funding support for prototype development and field trials has been increased to encourage innovation.
Focus Areas for Technology Deployment
Indian Railways has identified several priority areas for technological intervention:
- AI-based elephant intrusion detection systems
- AI-enabled fire detection in train coaches
- Drone-based track inspection and monitoring
- Fog and obstacle detection systems
- Solar-powered solutions and smart coach monitoring
The ministry said these technologies will improve operational efficiency, passenger safety, and real-time monitoring capabilities across the railway network.
e-RCT System: Complete Digitisation of Railway Claims
In another key reform, the Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT) has been made fully digital through the e-RCT platform.
Passengers filing claims related to railway accidents, injuries, or compensation cases can now complete the entire process online without visiting tribunal offices physically.
Key Features of e-RCT
- 24×7 online e-filing facility
- Hybrid (virtual and physical) hearings
- Real-time case tracking
- Digital document submission and management
- Instant online access to judgments and orders
All 23 Railway Claims Tribunal benches across India are expected to be digitised within the next 12 months.
Benefits for Passengers and Legal Professionals
The digital system reduces paperwork, travel requirements, and procedural delays. Key advantages include:
- Filing claims from anywhere
- Instant updates via SMS and email
- Faster case processing
- Reduced administrative burden
- Greater transparency in proceedings
Toward a Technology-Driven Railway Ecosystem
With the launch of the Rail Tech Policy and e-RCT system, Indian Railways is reinforcing its commitment to innovation-led governance.
By enabling startups to collaborate and digitising tribunal processes, the railway network is moving toward a smarter, more efficient, and passenger-centric future.
