President Droupadi Murmu Calls for Collective Responsibility in Water Conservation at Jal Mahotsav 2026

Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday stressed that water conservation is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to treat water not merely as a resource for use but as a precious legacy for future generations.

Addressing the Jal Mahotsav 2026, the President said that ensuring water conservation must become an integral part of daily life and behaviour to safeguard the country’s future.

Water Linked to India’s Culture and Livelihoods

The President highlighted that in India, water is not just a basic necessity but is deeply connected to the country’s culture, traditions, livelihoods, and community life.

She noted that for many years, especially in rural areas, people—particularly women and children—had to travel long distances to collect drinking water.

Providing clean drinking water, she said, is not merely a matter of convenience but also relates to time, health, and dignity.

Jal Jeevan Mission Improving Rural Drinking Water Access

To address these challenges, the government launched the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide safe and clean drinking water to households in rural areas.

Through this initiative, millions of rural families are now receiving tap water connections in their homes, improving their quality of life.

Community Participation Essential for Water Conservation

President Murmu emphasised that when the responsibility of conserving resources is shared by both the government and society, the results are more effective and sustainable.

She highlighted the importance of community ownership in water management and conservation, expressing confidence that the initiative of handing over water supply infrastructure to Gram Panchayats under ‘Jal Arpan Diwas’ will strengthen this sense of ownership.

Role of Self-Help Groups in Water Security

The President also noted the growing role of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in water management.

These groups are actively participating in water testing, operations, and maintenance activities, contributing to improved water management at the community level.

She said the commitment of these groups has brought positive changes in the lives of women and local communities, and their participation will be crucial in ensuring long-term water security.

Need for Integrated Efforts for Water Security

Highlighting the need for coordinated efforts, President Murmu said that strengthening water security requires multi-dimensional and collaborative approaches.

In rural areas, greywater management is being promoted in coordination with the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The government is also working with the Central Ground Water Board and other institutions to promote sustainable water conservation practices.

Campaigns Promoting Rainwater Harvesting

The President said campaigns such as Catch the Rain and Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari are playing an important role in promoting rainwater harvesting and water conservation across the country.

She added that such coordinated efforts will help ensure long-term water security for India.

Jal Mahotsav to Encourage Mass Participation

President Murmu emphasised that raising awareness among the youth about water conservation and management will strengthen India’s water security in the future.

She expressed confidence that Jal Mahotsav will become a mass movement for water conservation in India.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti is organising Jal Mahotsav 2026 from March 8 to March 22, with the aim of strengthening community participation and local ownership in rural drinking water services under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
