Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai witnessed the inauguration and foundation laying of several ambitious infrastructure projects aimed at transforming connectivity and bolstering economic growth across Maharashtra. These initiatives, amounting to a total investment exceeding Rs 29,400 crore, encompassed critical sectors including roads, railways, and ports, marking a significant milestone in the region’s development landscape.
One of the flagship projects launched by PM Modi is the Thane Borivali Tunnel Project, with an estimated cost of Rs. 16,600 crores. Spanning 11.8 kilometers beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, this twin tube tunnel will establish a direct corridor linking Western Express Highway at Borivali to Thane Ghodbander Road. Anticipated to reduce travel time between Thane and Borivali by approximately 1 hour, the project promises to alleviate congestion and enhance commuter convenience significantly.
Simultaneously, PM Modi inaugurated the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, valued at over Rs. 6300 crore. Extending 6.65 kilometers, the GMLR aims to connect Western Express Highway at Goregaon with Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, facilitating seamless transportation links. This strategic initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity to the proposed new airport in Navi Mumbai and the Pune Mumbai Expressway, thereby catalyzing regional economic development.
Additionally, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the Kalyan Yard Remodelling and the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal at Turbhe, Navi Mumbai. The Kalyan Yard remodelling initiative seeks to optimize rail operations by segregating long-distance and suburban train traffic, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing congestion. Concurrently, the Gati Shakti Multi Modal Cargo Terminal, spread across 32,600 square meters, is poised to emerge as a key logistics hub, creating substantial employment opportunities and bolstering logistical capabilities for handling various commodities.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister inaugurated upgraded facilities at Mumbai’s pivotal railway stations. New platforms at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and extended platforms 10 & 11 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Station are set to accommodate longer trains, enhancing passenger capacity and operational efficiency, thus improving the overall travel experience for commuters.
In a proactive move towards addressing youth unemployment, PM Modi launched the Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikshan Yojana, a pioneering initiative with an allocation of approximately Rs. 5600 crore. This transformative program aims to empower youth aged 18 to 30 years by providing skill enhancement and industry exposure through structured internships, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in the evolving economic landscape.
