New Delhi — In a momentous announcement during his “Mann Ki Baat” radio program, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that Charaideo Maidam in Assam has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This accolade marks India’s 43rd World Heritage Site and is the first such recognition for the Northeast region.

Prime Minister Modi praised the inclusion of Charaideo Maidam, emphasizing its historical significance. He noted that “Charaideo” translates to “shining city on the hills,” reflecting its illustrious past as the first capital of the Ahom dynasty. The site is renowned for its ancient burial mounds, known as Maidams, which served as sacred repositories for the remains of ancestors and their valued possessions.

“This designation by UNESCO is not just an honor for Assam but for the entire nation. It signifies the global recognition of our rich cultural heritage and the historical importance of Charaideo Maidam,” Modi stated. He highlighted how the Maidams embody the profound cultural practices of the Ahom people, offering a window into their traditions and historical significance.

The Prime Minister emphasized that this recognition will significantly enhance tourism in Assam. “Being added to the UNESCO World Heritage list will attract international visitors, bringing global attention to Charaideo Maidam. It’s an opportunity for people from around the world to explore and appreciate our unique historical sites,” Modi explained.

Modi also encouraged people to visit Charaideo Maidam to experience its historical and cultural richness firsthand. “I urge all to include Charaideo Maidam in their travel itineraries. It is a chance to connect with our heritage and witness the grandeur of our historical legacy,” he added.

The UNESCO designation is expected to foster increased interest and investment in cultural tourism in Northeast India, highlighting the region’s historical and cultural treasures. As the first site from Northeast India to achieve this honor, Charaideo Maidam stands as a significant milestone in recognizing and preserving India’s diverse cultural heritage on a global stage.
