In the 112th episode of his popular radio program “Mann Ki Baat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a fervent appeal to citizens and organizations to engage with the newly launched National Anti-Narcotics Helpline ‘Manas’ as part of India’s ongoing battle against drug abuse.
Addressing the nation, PM Modi highlighted the persistent concern surrounding drug abuse, which affects many families across the country. “In Mann Ki Baat, I have often discussed the challenges of drugs. Every family worries that their child might be exposed to drugs,” Modi said. To address this critical issue, he introduced ‘Manas,’ a comprehensive initiative aimed at providing support and resources to those affected by drug addiction.
The ‘Manas’ helpline, which was recently inaugurated, features a toll-free number, 1933, designed to offer advice and information related to rehabilitation and de-addiction. “This is a very big step in the fight against drugs,” Modi remarked, emphasizing the significance of the initiative. He encouraged individuals seeking help or information on rehabilitation to call this number, as well as to provide any information regarding drug trafficking.
PM Modi assured that all communications with the Manas helpline would be treated confidentially. “All the information shared with Manas will be confidential,” he affirmed. He urged people, families, and organizations involved in the mission to create a drug-free India to make extensive use of the helpline.
The MANAS (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra) portal was officially launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 18. This initiative includes not only the toll-free number but also a web portal, a mobile app, and integration with the UMANG app. These platforms are designed to enable anonymous communication with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) around the clock, facilitating advice on de-addiction and reporting on drug trafficking.
In addition, the NCB, in collaboration with BISAG-N, has developed the “MAPDRUGS” web portal and mobile app to address the issue of illicit drug cultivation. This tool aims to provide accurate Geographic Information System (GIS) data to help destroy illegal cultivation sites effectively.
The launch of ‘Manas’ and associated tools marks a significant effort by the Indian government to tackle the complex problem of drug abuse and trafficking, underscoring a commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring a drug-free environment for future generations.
