Launched on September 17, 2023, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana is making significant strides in supporting artisans and craftspeople across India. This comprehensive scheme, introduced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, aims to provide end-to-end assistance to individuals who work with their hands and tools. Key components of the scheme include the issuance of PM Vishwakarma Certificates and ID Cards, skill upgradation opportunities, toolkit incentives, credit support, incentives for digital transactions, and marketing support.
The scheme has been rolled out nationwide, including in Karnataka State, where it has seen notable engagement. As of now, Chikkaballapur district alone has received 97,356 applications, with 17,696 successful registrations eligible for benefits under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana. This robust response underscores the significant interest and need for support among local artisans and craftspeople.
In addition to the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is actively implementing the “Assistance to Training Institutions (ATI)” Scheme. This central sector scheme provides financial support to strengthen the capacity of training institutions, including Ministry of MSME and State-level existing Entrepreneurial Development Institutions (EDIs), and to support skill development training programs. Over the past three years and the current year (up to July 26, 2024), the total funds released under the ATI Scheme have been as follows:
- FY 2021-22: Rs. 47.96 crore
- FY 2022-23: Rs. 21.99 crore
- FY 2023-24: Rs. 13.76 crore
- FY 2024-25 (as of July 26, 2024): Rs. 5.25 crore
In Karnataka, the Khadi industry continues to thrive, reflecting the state’s commitment to traditional crafts and sustainable employment. For the fiscal year 2023-24, the total production value under the Khadi industry in Karnataka reached Rs. 49,943.44 lakhs, generating employment for 27,612 individuals. The Khadi programme is implemented by registered Khadi Institutions, which are non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting the heritage of Khadi and providing livelihood opportunities.
These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing the economic prospects of artisans, boosting skill development, and promoting traditional industries. The PM Vishwakarma Yojana and the ATI Scheme, alongside the successful Khadi industry programs, are integral to fostering a supportive environment for craftspeople and small enterprises, ensuring sustainable growth and development across the country.
