PM Modi Urges Global Reform at U.N. General Assembly, Engages with Quad Leaders

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New York on September 22, 2024, to participate in the 79th U.N. General Assembly, where he called for essential reforms in global institutions to foster peace and development. His address at the Summit of the Future emphasized the need for a renewed commitment to multilateralism in addressing the pressing challenges of today.

The two-day summit precedes a high-level meeting of world leaders, which aims to tackle urgent global issues. This initiative was catalyzed by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who has long advocated for modernizing the existing international frameworks to better reflect the current global landscape.

In a rally held in Long Island, Modi addressed thousands of supporters, highlighting his government’s achievements over the past decade and outlining ambitious plans for India’s future. He praised the Indian diaspora, underscoring their vital contributions to strengthening India’s global presence.

Modi also participated in the sixth summit of the Quad alliance, meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at Biden’s alma mater, Archmere Academy. The leaders announced several key initiatives, including a new coast guard exercise, a logistics network, expanded maritime surveillance efforts, and a collaborative project to combat cervical cancer.

As discussions progress at the U.N. summit, the emphasis on multilateral cooperation and institutional reform is expected to shape the dialogue, as world leaders seek to build a more collaborative and responsive global governance framework.
