Drug Awareness Camp Held at Spituk to Promote Drug-Free Community in Ladakh

Date:

A Drug Awareness Camp was organized at Spituk, with active participation and leadership from local villagers, aiming to spread awareness about the harmful effects of substance abuse and promote a healthy, drug-free community.

The programme focused on educating residents—especially youth—about the physical, psychological, and social consequences of drug addiction while encouraging collective community action to tackle the issue.

Police and Community Leaders Stress Cooperation

The session was supported by Mr Padma, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), who highlighted the importance of strong community cooperation in preventing drug abuse. He emphasized that law enforcement alone cannot eliminate the problem and that active public participation is crucial in identifying and addressing substance abuse at the grassroots level.

Former President of Ladakh Youth, Mr Rigzin, also addressed the gathering. He encouraged young people to stay away from drugs and make positive life choices, urging them to focus on education, skill development, and constructive activities.

Health Experts Explain Dangers of Substance Abuse

Medical expert Dr Sharap elaborated on the serious health impacts of substance use, explaining how addiction affects mental health, physical well-being, and family life. The session provided valuable insights into early warning signs and the long-term consequences of drug dependency.

District De-Addiction Centre Shares Support Services

During the programme, Rigzin Yangdol, Incharge of the District De-Addiction Centre (DDAC), District De-Addiction Centre Leh, joined the session and gave a detailed overview of the facilities and services available at the centre.

Participants were informed about:

  • Treatment and rehabilitation programs
  • Counselling and psychological support
  • Medical assistance for substance withdrawal
  • Community-based support initiatives

The information helped attendees better understand how individuals struggling with addiction can access professional help and recovery support.

Community-Led Initiative for a Drug-Free Ladakh

The Drug Awareness Camp at Spituk reflects a growing community-driven movement in Ladakh to combat substance abuse through awareness, prevention, and rehabilitation support. Organizers emphasized that sustained efforts, youth engagement, and institutional backing are key to building a safe and drug-free society in the region.
