Horticulture Department Leh Conducts Farmers’ Training on Pruning & Orchard Management in Nubra

Leh: The Department of Horticulture Leh, through its Horticulture Zone Nubra, organized a one-day Farmers’ Training Programme on Pruning, Training, and Orchard Sanitation in the villages of Kuri, Murgi, and Trisha in Nubra Valley.

The programme saw enthusiastic participation from local farmers and orchardists, aiming to strengthen scientific orchard management practices in the region.


Focus on Scientific Pruning and Orchard Sanitation

The training programme was designed to enhance farmers’ technical knowledge and hands-on skills in:

  • Scientific pruning techniques
  • Tree training and canopy management
  • Removal of diseased and dead wood
  • Orchard sanitation to prevent pests and diseases

Shri Hamid Ullah, Horticulture Technician, along with departmental field staff, delivered detailed lectures and conducted live demonstrations on proper pruning methods suited to Nubra’s unique agro-climatic conditions.

Farmers were also guided on maintaining orchard hygiene and performing timely operations to improve fruit quality and increase yield.


Boosting Productivity in Nubra Valley

The initiative is part of the Department’s continuous efforts to promote modern horticulture practices across Ladakh. By encouraging scientific orchard management, the programme aims to:

  • Improve crop productivity
  • Reduce pest and disease-related losses
  • Enhance fruit quality
  • Increase the overall income of orchardists

Officials highlighted that adopting proper pruning and sanitation techniques can significantly improve plant health and long-term orchard sustainability.


Strengthening Ladakh’s Horticulture Sector

With horticulture emerging as a key livelihood source in Nubra Valley and other parts of Ladakh, such training programmes play a vital role in empowering farmers with updated technical knowledge.

The Department of Horticulture Leh reaffirmed its commitment to conducting similar capacity-building programmes to support farmers and strengthen the region’s horticulture economy.
