Kargil, April 12, 2026: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena laid the foundation stone for the development of rGyal Khatoon Park and Sher Bagh Park in Kargil under the AMRUT 2.0.
₹5.96 Crore Twin Park Projects
Both parks will be developed at a cost of ₹2.98 crore each, with a completion timeline of 18 months.
- rGyal Khatoon Park: Spread across 25,250 sq. metres (2.525 hectares)
- Sher Bagh Park (Baroo): Spread across 34,190 sq. metres (3.419 hectares)
The parks will feature modern amenities such as:
- Walking and jogging tracks
- Children’s play areas
- Water facilities and lighting
- CCTV surveillance
- Waterfalls and landscaped green spaces
Boost to Urban Infrastructure & Tourism
Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said the parks will:
- Enhance urban infrastructure in Kargil
- Provide recreational spaces for residents
- Improve the tourism experience in the region
He emphasized that well-planned public spaces are essential for creating a vibrant and livable urban environment.
Historical Significance of rGyal Khatoon Park
The rGyal Khatoon Park is named after rGyal Khatoon (Thila Khatoon), a historical figure associated with the Suru-Karchay region. She was the daughter of Sheikh Murad and sister of Ali Sher Khan Anchan of the Yabgo dynasty.
Call for Clean & Green Kargil
The LG urged citizens to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness and preserving the natural beauty of Kargil, stating that collective responsibility is key to sustainable urban development.
Focus on Holistic Development
He also announced plans to review development needs in Kargil town, in coordination with:
- Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon
- Mohmad Hanifa Jan
The aim is to ensure comprehensive urban planning and infrastructure growth in the region.
Plantation Drive Promotes Green Cover
Earlier, a plantation drive was conducted at Bemathang by the Forest Department, where the Lieutenant Governor planted saplings to promote environmental conservation and increased green cover in Ladakh.
