DC Kargil Reviews Decongestion Plan, Orders Streamlining of Cables, Drainage and Traffic in Town

Kargil, April 16, 2026: Deputy Commissioner/CEO LAHDC Kargil Rakesh Kumar chaired a high-level meeting to review a comprehensive decongestion, beautification, and civic management plan for Kargil town, focusing on improving urban infrastructure and public convenience.


Focus on Removing Cable Clutter

A key concern discussed was the mess of overhead cables and redundant infrastructure across the town.

  • Telecom providers like BSNL, Jio, and Airtel were directed to properly streamline wiring systems
  • The Power Development Department was instructed to remove unnecessary poles and organise existing ones
  • Local cable operators were asked to regulate wiring to enhance safety and aesthetics

Drainage System to Be Upgraded

To tackle waterlogging and sanitation issues, the administration directed:

  • Improvement of drainage systems in Poyen and main market areas
  • Proper channelisation of wastewater towards the river after treatment
  • Exploration of reuse of treated water for agriculture using gravity-based flow systems

Measures to Protect River Hygiene

The DC stressed the importance of maintaining river cleanliness and ordered:

  • A ban on washing vehicles and clothes along riverbanks
  • Development of designated washing ghats
  • Plantation drives along riverbanks to improve ecology and visual appeal

Traffic Decongestion and Urban Planning

To address congestion in the town:

  • Plans were discussed to shift and reorganise parking spaces
  • Regulation of small vendors and roadside shops was proposed
  • Focus on smoother traffic flow in busy market areas

These measures aim to ensure better mobility and reduced crowding.


Push for Organised Commercial Spaces

The administration also emphasised the need for:

  • Development of planned commercial spaces and shops
  • Allotment of shops on rent to generate revenue while ensuring proper urban planning

Vision for a Cleaner, Safer Kargil

The Deputy Commissioner urged all departments to expedite implementation of decisions, aiming to transform Kargil into a cleaner, safer, and more attractive town for both residents and tourists.
