During his visit to West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday took a tranquil boat ride on the Hooghly River in Kolkata, in an experience that blended heritage exploration with visual documentation of the city’s riverfront.
The morning journey offered a sweeping view of the Hooghly’s calm waters, framed by landmarks such as the Howrah Bridge and Vidyasagar Setu, which added to the visual appeal of the experience. The visit gained wide attention after the Prime Minister shared photographs on social media, where he was seen aboard a traditional wooden boat, camera in hand, observing and capturing the surroundings.
During the river ride, PM Modi described the experience as deeply enriching, underlining the spiritual and cultural importance of the river. He noted that for the people of Bengal, the Ganga holds a sacred and emotional place in everyday life, symbolising continuity, tradition, and civilisation. He expressed reverence for the river and referred to the moment as a way of paying homage to “Maa Ganga.”
In his social media update, the Prime Minister also highlighted brief interactions with local boatmen and residents seen along the riverbanks in the early hours. He acknowledged the efforts of the boatmen, emphasizing their long-standing association with the river and their dependence on it for livelihood. These exchanges, he said, reflected the lively and enduring culture that thrives along the Hooghly.
A notable part of the visit was PM Modi’s engagement with photography. He shared that he “attempted photographing this remarkable river,” capturing its scenic stretches along with iconic structures visible from the boat. The images portrayed him actively documenting the river’s landscape during the journey.
The visit also carried a governance message, as the Prime Minister reiterated the central government’s continued focus on the development and progress of West Bengal.
