Greener Changthang Mission Gains Momentum with KVK Nyoma Initiative

Date:

In a significant push toward environmental sustainability in Ladakh’s fragile high-altitude ecosystem, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma Changthang has joined hands with local communities to promote a greener and more sustainable Changthang region.

The initiative, launched on April 26, 2026, in Leh, focuses on strengthening community participation in environmental conservation while encouraging eco-friendly agricultural practices and sustainable resource management. Officials stated that the programme aims to address growing environmental concerns in the cold desert region, which is known for its unique biodiversity and ecological sensitivity.

The campaign witnessed active involvement from farmers, local residents, and KVK scientists, reflecting a collaborative effort to tackle environmental challenges at the grassroots level. The programme emphasized the importance of natural farming techniques, reduced chemical usage, and conservation of soil and water resources, which are critical for sustaining agriculture in the harsh climatic conditions of Changthang.

Community Participation at the Core

Changthang, located in eastern Ladakh, is a high-altitude plateau region that includes parts of the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, one of the largest protected areas in the region. The area is home to nomadic communities, rare wildlife, and delicate ecosystems that are increasingly vulnerable to climate change and human activity.

Officials from KVK Nyoma highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote sustainable livelihoods while preserving the natural environment. The programme includes awareness drives, field demonstrations, and training sessions aimed at educating local communities about climate-resilient agricultural practices and ecological conservation methods.

Experts involved in the initiative stressed that community participation is key to ensuring long-term environmental sustainability, especially in remote regions like Changthang where traditional knowledge and modern science must work together. By involving villagers directly, the programme seeks to create a sense of ownership and responsibility toward protecting local natural resources.

Focus on Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihoods

The effort also aligns with ongoing initiatives by KVK Nyoma, which has been actively working to promote scientific agriculture, horticulture development, and farmer training programmes in the region. Recent activities have included exposure visits, orchard development programmes, and awareness campaigns aimed at improving productivity while maintaining ecological balance.

Officials noted that Changthang’s extreme weather conditions, limited vegetation, and water scarcity make it particularly vulnerable to environmental degradation. Therefore, adopting sustainable practices is essential not only for environmental protection but also for ensuring the livelihood security of local communities, many of whom depend on agriculture and pastoral activities.

Towards a Greener Future

The initiative also focuses on promoting green practices such as plantation drives, waste management, and efficient use of natural resources, with the goal of building a resilient ecosystem that can withstand climate pressures. Awareness campaigns are being conducted to encourage people to minimize environmental damage and adopt eco-conscious lifestyles.

Authorities believe that such collaborative efforts between scientific institutions and local communities can play a crucial role in transforming Changthang into a model region for sustainable development in high-altitude areas.

The programme marks another step in Ladakh’s ongoing efforts to balance development with environmental conservation. With continued community engagement and scientific support, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the vision of a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Changthang, safeguarding its natural heritage for future generations.
