Leh Hosts Two-Day AYUSH Orientation Programme on Traditional Sowa Rigpa Medicine

Date:

Ladakh: A significant step towards strengthening traditional healthcare education and community awareness was recently taken in Leh, where a two-day orientation and training programme under the National AYUSH Mission was successfully conducted in collaboration with the Sowa Rigpa system of medicine. The programme focused on improving understanding, integration, and practical knowledge of traditional healing systems among healthcare workers and practitioners in Ladakh.

The training initiative was organised as part of the National AYUSH Mission (NAM), which aims to promote Indian systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Sowa Rigpa through structured capacity-building programmes and healthcare integration. In Ladakh, Sowa Rigpa holds special cultural and medical significance as it is deeply rooted in the region’s traditional healthcare practices.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with experts and institutions associated with Sowa Rigpa healthcare and education, including practitioners and scholars from Leh. The sessions were designed to provide participants with updated knowledge on traditional medicine systems while also aligning them with modern healthcare requirements.

Officials stated that the primary objective of the workshop was to strengthen the skills of healthcare professionals working under AYUSH systems and to promote scientific understanding of traditional healing practices. The training also aimed to improve coordination between traditional medicine practitioners and public health systems in the region.

During the two-day programme, participants were introduced to various aspects of Sowa Rigpa, including diagnostic techniques, herbal formulations, preventive healthcare methods, and patient care practices. Experts highlighted how Sowa Rigpa, also known as the “science of healing,” has been practiced for centuries in the Himalayan region and continues to play an important role in community healthcare in Ladakh.

The sessions also included discussions on the integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare systems, ensuring better accessibility and treatment outcomes for patients in remote and high-altitude regions. Trainers emphasized the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge while adopting scientific approaches for validation and improvement.

Participants included healthcare workers, practitioners, and trainees associated with AYUSH centres, who actively engaged in interactive discussions, demonstrations, and practical learning sessions. The programme provided them with an opportunity to enhance their understanding of traditional medicine systems and their relevance in contemporary healthcare.

Experts from the Sowa Rigpa field also highlighted the importance of medicinal plants and local resources used in traditional treatments. They stressed the need for sustainable use of herbal resources and proper documentation of indigenous knowledge systems, which form the backbone of Sowa Rigpa practice.

Officials associated with the National AYUSH Mission noted that such training programmes are crucial for strengthening healthcare delivery in remote regions like Ladakh, where traditional systems of medicine often serve as the first point of care for local communities. They also emphasized that capacity-building initiatives help bridge the gap between traditional and modern healthcare systems.

The programme concluded with feedback sessions, where participants shared their experiences and suggested further advanced-level training in the future. Organisers assured that similar initiatives would continue to be conducted to support skill development, knowledge enhancement, and integration of AYUSH systems in public healthcare.

With this initiative, Ladakh continues to reinforce its position as a key region for the preservation and promotion of Sowa Rigpa and traditional Himalayan medicine systems, while also aligning with national efforts to strengthen holistic healthcare under the AYUSH framework.
