Two-Way Traffic Between Minamarg and Sonamarg is set to Resume from May 14

Date:

Kargil: Giving a boost to regional connectivity, the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Kargil has confirmed that two-way traffic is being restored on the Minamarg-Sonmarg section from May 14, 2026. Smooth vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, considered the lifeline of Ladakh-Kashmir, will significantly improve connectivity.

The announcement comes after a period of regulated one-way traffic arrangements imposed due to adverse weather conditions, snow clearance operations, and safety concerns along the high-altitude stretch. Officials stated that with road conditions now stabilising and clearance work reaching completion, the route will once again support bi-directional traffic movement under controlled supervision and scheduled timings.

CEC Kargil noted that the restoration of two-way movement has been finalised after coordination between traffic authorities, engineering departments, and district administrations involved in maintaining the strategic highway. The move is aimed at reducing congestion, easing travel delays, and improving the flow of both civilian and essential goods transport between the two regions.

The Minamarg–Sonamarg stretch forms a crucial segment of the NH-1 corridor, passing through terrain that connects Ganderbal district in Kashmir with Dras and further into Kargil in Ladakh. Sonamarg acts as a key gateway towards Ladakh, while Minamarg serves as an important transit point before the Zojila axis.

Officials emphasised that while the reopening of both-way traffic will bring relief to commuters, it will still remain subject to real-time weather monitoring and road safety advisories, given the area’s vulnerability to landslides, snow patches, and sudden climatic changes.

The decision will greatly benifits transporters, businesses, tourists, and emergency services (such as ambulances), all of whom rely on the highway. This will save travel time and reduce congestion. It will also boost business in the entire area ahead of the tourist season.

Officials have urged travelers to strictly follow traffic rules and listen to safety staff along the route. The administration has clarified that this essential Himalayan route is being gradually reopened, but safety is of paramount importance.
