Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express Becomes People’s First Choice; Nearly 45,000 Passengers Travel in 10 Days: Centre

Date:

The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express service is receiving an overwhelming response from passengers. According to the Ministry of Railways, this modern train service—launched between Jammu and Kashmir—has transported approximately 45,000 passengers within just the first 10 days of its operation. The Ministry states that this train is now emerging as the new lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the historic 272-kilometre-long Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link on June 6, 2025. Subsequently, on April 30, 2026, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the 20-coach Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. Following the commencement of regular operations, the four train services running on this route transported a total of 44,727 passengers between May 2 and May 11.

According to the Ministry of Railways, 28,762 passengers travelled during just the first week of the train service. This figure demonstrates the rapid pace at which the demand for travel on the Jammu-Kashmir rail corridor is growing. On this route, Train Nos. 26401 and 26402 run between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar six days a week, while Train Nos. 26403 and 26404 operate on all days except Wednesdays. Thus, on most days, four train services are available to passengers for their commute.

According to the Railways, on several days, the number of passengers reached near-capacity levels. On May 3, 4,977 passengers travelled, while on May 10, this figure rose to 5,657. On Sundays, the average occupancy of the trains was recorded at over 98 per cent, a statistic that highlights the growing popularity of this route. Railway officials state that while 8-coach trains previously used to fill up completely, seats are now being booked rapidly even though the trains consist of 20 coaches. This train service is not merely a mode of transport; it has brought about a significant transformation in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir and in the lives of its people. Devotees, students, businesspersons, government employees, and tourists can now undertake comfortable journeys without any interruptions.

Tourists are now reaching Kashmir aboard the Vande Bharat train, enjoying panoramic views of world-class railway bridges such as the Chenab and Anji. The train has been specifically designed to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, ensuring that travel remains hassle-free even during snowfall and landslides. The Ministry of Railways further noted that the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat has emerged as the most affordable travel option on this route. The Chair Car ticket includes meals and is priced significantly lower than air travel or taxi services.

While flight tickets often place a heavy burden on passengers’ pockets, the Vande Bharat train offers a comfortable and safe travel experience at a much lower cost. Notably, the train service remains a reliable alternative for passengers even in situations where highways are closed. This rail journey from Jammu to Srinagar is being hailed as one of the most scenic railway routes in the world. Towering mountains, long tunnels, engineering marvels like the Chenab and Anji bridges, and the lush green valleys of Kashmir combine to offer passengers a truly memorable experience.

The Ministry of Railways states that Indian Railways is providing this specialised service at fares even lower than the operational costs to ensure it remains accessible to the common people. According to the Railways, with the onset of the summer season, the number of tourists visiting Kashmir is expected to rise sharply. This train will prove to be a major convenience for travellers heading to popular tourist destinations such as Dal Lake, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg. Passengers can now board the train at Jammu Tawi and reach Srinagar in less than five hours. Furthermore, the volume of passengers on this route is expected to increase even more rapidly in the coming months.
