The second edition of ICMR-SHINE (Science and Health Innovation for NextGen Explorers) began today. Organized by the DHR and ICMR, this two-day event is taking place at 83 locations across the country on August 11–12. Through this initiative, school students will have the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into science and research at ICMR laboratories.
Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for students to “spend one day as a scientist,” this initiative focuses on engaging children from various parts of the country in scientific activities. Held in locations ranging from high-altitude Keylong in Himachal Pradesh to Kerala, and from Diu to Nagaland, the program aims to foster scientific thinking, curiosity, and an interest in research among students.
On this occasion, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary of the DHR and Director General of the ICMR, urged students to remain curious, ask questions, and explore new possibilities. He stated that the SHINE experience would connect young people to the world of health research and inspire them to choose science as a career.
During his interaction with the students attending the event, Dr. Rajiv Bahl answered their questions related to science, health, and research. He encouraged the students to remain curious and to think beyond textbooks. He also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing ICMR’s research and innovation.
Over these two days, students from government and private schools (grades 9 to 12) are gaining exposure to health research. By participating in lab tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, and live demonstrations, they are learning about the research and public health initiatives of ICMR scientists.
ICMR launched the official SHINE website (shine.icmr.org.in), offering students resources and opportunities in health research. It also announced a nationwide competition where students can propose research questions and solutions to public health challenges, with around 30,000 students expected to participate.
Through this initiative, the ICMR is focusing on fostering a scientific mindset among students by connecting them with science and research. The program inspires young people to contribute to the field of research in the future and become partners in the goal of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.
