Representatives from MUFG, DBJ, Mizuho, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, and Nippon Life discussed India’s economic landscape, emerging opportunities, and ways to boost Japanese institutional investment in India.
Emphasizing India’s robust economic position, Mr. Goyal noted that the country’s growth rate stood at 7.7% last year, despite global uncertainties. He stated that a strong banking sector, adequate capital buffers, low NPAs, a growing middle class, and rising incomes are propelling India towards the goal of becoming a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047.
Shri Goyal invited increased investment from Japan in rapidly growing sectors such as semiconductors, AI, data centers, renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure. Highlighting skilled talent, robust IP protection, policy reforms, and an investor-friendly business environment, he described Japan as a trusted partner in India’s journey to becoming a global manufacturing and technology hub.
Japanese financial institutions reaffirmed their confidence in India’s long-term growth rate and outlined plans to expand their presence in key sectors. MUFG highlighted its investment of approximately USD 4 billion in Shriram Finance and its growing interest in renewable energy and hydrogen. DBJ pointed to opportunities in real estate and venture capital, while Mizuho noted the rising profitability of Japanese companies in India. Morgan Stanley also underscored India’s strategic importance; the company employs over 19,000 people in the country and is rapidly focusing on high-value financial services.
Japanese institutions maintained a positive long-term outlook towards India while also highlighting currency and regulatory factors that influence short-term decisions. Mr. Goyal welcomed this feedback and reiterated the government’s focus on improving the Ease of Doing Business and creating a more conducive environment for investment.
The meeting highlighted GIFT City’s potential to attract international capital to India and boost investment flows between Japan and India. Mr. Goyal emphasized that India seeks long-term partnerships that bring technology, innovation, manufacturing expertise, and jobs, while also fostering better integration with global value chains.
This meeting reinforced the strong confidence of Japanese investors in India and the shared goal of mobilizing 10 trillion yen in private investment over the next decade, thereby paving the way for deeper economic, technological, and business ties.
