The Lok Sabha convened today to mark the solemn occasion of the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India, with Speaker Om Birla delivering a heartfelt address that underscored the importance of preserving democratic values and constitutional freedoms.

Speaker Om Birla commenced the session by condemning the Emergency declared on 25th June 1975 as a dark period in India’s history, characterized by the suspension of civil liberties, media censorship, and political repression. He paid tribute to the resilience of individuals who courageously opposed the Emergency, standing firm in defense of democracy and the principles enshrined in the Constitution.

Emphasizing the significance of the day, Speaker Birla reaffirmed India’s commitment to upholding the largest democracy in the world, where dialogue and dissent form the cornerstone of governance. He invoked the visionary leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, highlighting the enduring relevance of his constitutional framework in guiding the nation through turbulent times.

During the session, members of various political parties, including the opposition, voiced concerns over recent developments that they perceive as threats to democratic norms and constitutional principles. Their impassioned speeches reflected ongoing debates on safeguarding civil liberties and ensuring accountability in governance.

In a moment of reflection, the Lok Sabha observed a solemn silence to honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during the Emergency, recognizing their unwavering commitment to preserving democratic ideals.

Following the tributes and reflections, the House unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the imposition of Emergency, reaffirming its commitment to protecting democratic freedoms and constitutional rights. The resolution symbolized the Lok Sabha’s collective resolve to uphold India’s democratic heritage and prevent the recurrence of such challenges in the future.

The session concluded with a renewed sense of unity and determination among parliamentarians from across party lines, pledging to defend democratic values and safeguard the rights of all citizens. Speaker Om Birla’s leadership in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emergency underscored the Lok Sabha’s role as a bastion of India’s democratic aspirations and resilience in the face of adversity.
