Lok Niwas Ladakh Celebrates Utkal Divas, Showcases Odisha’s Cultural Heritage Under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat

Leh, April 1, 2026: Utkal Divas, also known as Odisha Day, was celebrated with enthusiasm and cultural pride at Lok Niwas in Leh under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.

The celebration aimed to promote national unity, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding among people from different states and Union Territories.

Commemorating Odisha’s Formation

Utkal Divas is observed every year on April 1 to mark the formation of Odisha as a separate province in 1936, highlighting its unique linguistic and cultural identity.

Cultural Parallels Between Odisha and Ladakh

Speaking on the occasion, Under Secretary Sumera Shafi extended greetings to personnel from Odisha serving in Ladakh. She drew parallels between Odisha and Ladakh, emphasizing their:

  • Deep spiritual traditions
  • Rich architectural heritage
  • Strong community values

She praised Odisha’s iconic Sun Temple Konark and noted similarities with Ladakh’s renowned Buddhist monasteries.

Shared Heritage and Spirit of Service

Sumera Shafi also highlighted the tribal cultural connections between the two regions, underlining the importance of preserving traditions and community bonds.

She commended personnel from Odisha serving in Ladakh for their dedication and patriotism, especially while working in the challenging conditions of the cold desert region.

Odisha Personnel Share Experiences

Personnel from Odisha expressed gratitude to the UT Administration for organizing the event, describing Ladakh as their “second home.” They shared their journey of adapting to high-altitude conditions and spoke about Odisha’s rich history, including the Kalinga War, after which Emperor Ashoka embraced non-violence and Buddhism.

They also highlighted the spiritual significance of the Jagannath Temple, one of the revered Char Dham pilgrimage sites, inviting people from Ladakh to visit Odisha.

Strengthening National Integration

The event reaffirmed the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat by showcasing Odisha’s vibrant culture and strengthening the bonds of unity and brotherhood across regions.

The programme was attended by Chief Accounts Officer Tsewang Dorji, Under Secretaries Sumera Shafi and Deachen Chondol, along with officials and staff of Lok Niwas and the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat.
