Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop Held in Leh, Focus on Preparedness and Resilience in Ladakh

A sensitisation workshop on Disaster Risk Resilience (DRR) was organised in Leh by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management Relief Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Ladakh.

The workshop was held in the presence of Madhup Vyas, Executive Director of NIDM.

Focus on Disaster Preparedness and Community Resilience

The programme aimed to:

  • Build awareness about disaster risks in high-altitude regions
  • Strengthen preparedness and response mechanisms
  • Promote community participation and resilience

Special emphasis was laid on:

  • Risk communication using digital platforms and social media
  • Behavioural change for better disaster preparedness
  • Addressing Ladakh-specific environmental and geographical challenges

Key Sessions on DRR Planning and Mechanisms

Shekhar Chaturvedi conducted a session on:

  • Institutional frameworks under the Disaster Management Act
  • Major hazards in Ladakh
  • Incident Response System (IRS)
  • Disaster funding and planning challenges

Digital Initiatives and Capacity Building

Nazia Khan highlighted:

  • NIDM’s e-learning platforms and iGOT portal
  • Online disaster management courses
  • Modules on climate change, earthquake risk, and community-based disaster management

Interactive Discussion with Stakeholders

Officials from:

  • National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
  • Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

participated in an open-house discussion, raising queries on disaster preparedness and Ladakh-specific concerns.

Call for Practical Preparedness

In his concluding remarks, Madhup Vyas emphasized:

  • Effective utilisation of disaster management knowledge
  • Need for practical preparedness and trained human resources

He also informed about an upcoming conference on April 18 focusing on State Disaster Management Authorities.

Rising Risks in Ladakh

The workshop highlighted that:

  • Ladakh faces increasing vulnerability due to natural disasters
  • Growing tourism and development require balanced environmental planning

Participation and Conclusion

The event saw participation from:

  • Deputy Commissioner and senior UT officials
  • District and block-level officers
  • Civil society organisations and local institutions

The workshop concluded with a valedictory address by the Deputy Commissioner Leh, appreciating the initiative and knowledge shared.
