Biodiversity Conservation Workshop Held at GDC Drass, Focus on Monitoring & Community Participation

A Conservation Awareness Workshop on Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation was successfully organised at Government Degree College Drass, bringing together students, faculty, and experts to discuss ecological challenges in the Himalayan region.

Focus on Fragile Himalayan Ecosystem

The programme was organized by the Himalayan Citizen Science and Biodiversity Centre of the college. Principal Nasirul Mehdi Shabani emphasized:

  • The ecological sensitivity of Ladakh
  • The need for collaborative conservation efforts

Expert Sessions on Wildlife & Conservation

Key sessions were delivered by experts from Canine Control & Care:

  • Beena explained the science and benefits of dog sterilization
  • Highlighted its role in:
    • Reducing human-wildlife conflict
    • Maintaining ecological balance

She also stressed community participation in:

  • Catching
  • Sterilizing
  • Releasing dogs back into their habitats

Insights from BNHS on Biodiversity

Mohd Raza from the Bombay Natural History Society shared:

  • Importance of scientific biodiversity monitoring
  • Need for public involvement in conservation efforts

Student Participation & Coordination

  • The event was anchored by student Khadija Banoo
  • Concluding vote of thanks delivered by Deechan Angmo

The workshop highlighted:
