Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a special meeting in Abu Dhabi on Friday. During the meeting, the two countries decided to work together in the areas of business, defense, and energy. The two leaders also signed several important agreements to further strengthen their relationship. These talks, which took place during PM Modi’s stay there, were primarily aimed at furthering the friendship and trade between India and the UAE.
Officials confirmed that the two countries concluded six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as energy security, defence production, maritime cooperation, investment promotion, and technology collaboration. The agreements are intended to enhance stability in supply chains and expand cooperation in sectors critical to both economies.
The talks successfully renewed the focus on energy cooperation. India and the UAE agreed to further strengthen collaboration in crude oil supply arrangements, strategic petroleum reserves, and LPG trade mechanisms, reinforcing India’s efforts to secure reliable and diversified energy sources. The UAE remains one of India’s most important energy partners, supplying a significant share of its crude oil imports.
Defence cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. Both sides agreed to deepen engagement in joint defence production, naval security coordination, and emerging defence technologies. According to officials, the framework will also encourage cooperation in areas such as cybersecurity, secure communication systems, and defence industrial partnerships, reflecting the growing convergence of strategic interests.
The UAE also reiterated its commitment to invest $5 billion in India across infrastructure, energy, and financial services, strengthening its role as a major investor in the Indian economy. The investment is expected to support ongoing development initiatives and enhance connectivity under regional economic frameworks, including the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).
Beyond traditional sectors, both countries discussed expanding cooperation in digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and advanced computing systems. Officials said these discussions reflect a shift towards future-oriented collaboration focused on innovation and knowledge-driven industries.
The meeting comes amid a shifting geopolitical environment in West Asia, where energy security and trade stability have become key priorities for several countries. India, which depends heavily on imported energy, has been actively strengthening partnerships with Gulf nations to ensure consistent supply chains and long-term economic resilience.
Recent agreements between India and the UAE (Abu Dhabi) demonstrate the depth of their friendship. Previously limited to oil and trade, the partnership has expanded to include defense, technology, investment, and manufacturing.
Once the new agreements come into effect, it is expected that both countries will expedite their implementation, further strengthening their partnership in the region.
