New Two-Lane Tube Tunnel to be Built Parallel to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel in Udhampur: Jitendra Singh

Date:

Announcing a significant infrastructure project for the Udhampur region of Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh stated that a new two-lane tube tunnel would be constructed parallel to the existing Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel on National Highway-44. He described this as a major step towards the region’s development and improved traffic connectivity.

Gratitude Expressed to NHAI and Nitin Gadkari

Sharing the information on the social media platform X, Jitendra Singh stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had accepted his request. He remarked that this is further good news for Udhampur, noting that the construction of the new tunnel would help alleviate the increasing traffic pressure on the Chenani-Nashri route.

Improved Traffic Management on NH-44

The Union Minister stated that National Highway-44 is the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir, and the volume of vehicles on this route is steadily rising. In this context, constructing a new two-lane tube tunnel parallel to the existing Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel will make traffic management more effective. He added that the project’s completion would ensure a safe, smooth, and faster travel experience for commuters, while also boosting trade, tourism, and other economic activities in the region.

Benefits for Lakhs of Commuters

Jitendra Singh stated that this project would prove beneficial not only for local residents but also for the lakhs of people traveling between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley. Once the new tunnel is built, traffic load will be distributed, thereby reducing traffic congestion and travel time. He noted that improved road connectivity would give fresh momentum to regional development and make the movement of people more convenient.

Existing Tunnel Inaugurated in 2017

The Union Minister recalled that the Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 2, 2017. Located on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, this tunnel is one of the key infrastructure projects in the region. He stated that this tunnel has played a significant role in reducing travel time and ensuring better connectivity in all weather conditions. Now, the construction of a new parallel tunnel will further enhance traffic capacity.

Special emphasis on infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir

Jitendra Singh said that the Central Government is placing special emphasis on the development of road, rail, and other infrastructure projects in Jammu & Kashmir. He expressed confidence that the new tunnel project would make a vital contribution to the region’s overall development and strengthen connectivity.
