India’s First Hydrogen Train Rolls Out from Jind; PM Modi Leads Historic Launch

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen train from the Jind railway station in Haryana today. With this achievement, India joined the league of select countries that have used hydrogen technology for clean rail transport.

Jind-Sonipat to be the Pilot Route

This hydrogen train, operating between Jind and Sonipat, marks a major milestone for Indian Railways. The project symbolises the Railways’ commitment to innovation, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly transportation. The Jind-Sonipat section has been selected for the pilot project. An indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been developed in Jind to support the train’s operations. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has issued the necessary licenses for the storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Train

– Based on hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train generates electricity through a chemical reaction involving hydrogen.
– Water vapour is the only by-product, ensuring zero carbon emissions.
– It will play a crucial role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels and achieving net-zero targets.

A hydrogen compression system has been installed for refuelling. To ensure safety and reliability, a standby compressor unit and essential spare parts have also been provided.

India on the Global Stage

With this launch, India joins the ranks of countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the USA, where hydrogen-based rail systems are being tested or operated. Although the technology is still in its nascent stage, only a few countries worldwide are currently operating such trains.

Inauguration of Tikamgarh Station

On Friday, Prime Minister Modi will also virtually inaugurate the Tikamgarh railway station in Madhya Pradesh under the ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will attend the local event. This day will prove to be a memorable milestone for Indian Railways in its pursuit of clean energy and the goals of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India).
