India Hits Major Clean Energy Milestone as Non-Fossil Capacity Surpasses 300 GW

Date:

India has achieved a major milestone in the clean energy sector. By July 31, 2026, the country’s installed power generation capacity based on non-fossil fuels crossed the 300 GW mark. This represents more than 60 percent of India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.

The share of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity in the country’s total power generation capacity (which currently stands at approximately 552 GW) has exceeded 54%.

Solar Leads Clean Energy Capacity

With an installed capacity of 164.59 GW, solar power remains the largest contributor to India’s non-fossil fuel capacity. It is followed by:

  • Wind power: 58.14 GW
  • Hydropower (large and small): 57.24 GW
  • Bio-power: 11.75 GW
  • Nuclear power: 8.78 GW

This achievement reflects the rapid expansion of India’s renewable energy sector over the past decade. In 2014, the country’s solar energy capacity stood at merely 2.8 GW, a figure that has now risen to approximately 165 GW. Similarly, wind energy capacity has grown from 21 GW in 2014 to over 58 GW today.

India added a record capacity of 55.29 GW non-fossil fuel based electricity capacity was installed in the country during 2025-26. with key contributions from 44.6 GW solar power and 6 GW wind power.

Renewable energy generation in India has also increased rapidly. It rose from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26.

To boost the rapidly growing solar sector and foster self-reliance, India has strengthened domestic solar manufacturing. As a result, the registered capacity of solar PV modules under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) has risen from 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 200 GW.

In this direction, India is strengthening its industrial capacity in the clean energy sector through the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Its objective is to establish India as a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
