Women Power India’s iPhone Production as Smartphone Exports Surge

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that more than one lakh women are currently employed in iPhone manufacturing units across India.

He highlighted that the government’s Make in India initiative has created large-scale employment opportunities for women in the electronics manufacturing sector.

Make in India Empowering Women

In a post on the social media platform X, the minister said the initiative launched by Narendra Modi is empowering women by opening new employment opportunities in electronics manufacturing.

According to Vaishnaw, women now constitute more than half of the workforce in several electronics manufacturing units across the country.

He added that women are also working in advanced sectors such as semiconductor manufacturing, reflecting their growing participation in high-tech industries.

Jobs Created in Apple Ecosystem

The minister noted that the **Apple Inc. ecosystem in India has generated around 2.5 lakh direct jobs, of which about 70 percent are held by women.

He previously stated that the Make in India initiative has led to millions of direct and indirect employment opportunities, along with expanded skill development programs.

iPhone Production Surges in India

India has seen a sharp rise in iPhone production in recent years. According to reports, iPhone production in India increased by about 53 percent in 2025, reaching 55 million units, compared to 36 million units in 2024.

Currently, Apple Inc. manufactures around one-fourth of its global iPhone production in India. The company produces approximately 220–230 million iPhones globally each year.

Smartphones Become India’s Top Export Category

In 2025, iPhones became India’s most valuable exported product, with exports reaching about $23 billion.

Smartphones also emerged as India’s largest export category for the first time, with total exports reaching around $30.13 billion between January and December 2025.

Out of this, Apple Inc. accounted for nearly 76 percent of India’s smartphone exports, highlighting the growing importance of electronics manufacturing in the country’s export economy.
