Vice Chancellor of University of Ladakh Reviews KVK Nyoma, Promotes Agricultural Innovation in Changthang

Date:

Leh, April 15, 2026: Vice Chancellor of the University of Ladakh, Prof. Saket Kushwaha, visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma to review ongoing agricultural initiatives and promote innovation in high-altitude farming.

Review of Agricultural Progress and Action Plan

During the visit, officials at KVK Nyoma presented a detailed progress report and action plan for 2026–27, highlighting key interventions in agriculture and allied sectors aimed at improving farmer livelihoods in the Changthang region.

The Vice Chancellor interacted with scientists, farmers, and local stakeholders, assessing the impact of ongoing programmes.

High-Altitude Apple Orchard Impresses Officials

On the way to Nyoma, the team visited a model apple orchard at Nee village, developed under the MIDH project. The orchard, featuring cold-resistant rootstocks, recorded an impressive 98.59% survival rate, showcasing successful adaptation to Ladakh’s harsh climate.

The initiative was appreciated as a significant step in expanding horticulture in high-altitude regions.

Focus on Innovation and Sustainable Farming

At the KVK, innovative practices such as mud-walled greenhouses for vegetable cultivation were demonstrated, enabling farming even in extreme weather conditions.

The Vice Chancellor encouraged:

  • Adoption of modern agricultural technologies
  • Promotion of sustainable farming practices
  • Development of market linkages for farm produce

Boost to Farmer Outreach and Services

Prof. Kushwaha suggested strengthening outreach by:

  • Organising exposure visits for farmers to other hilly states
  • Establishing KVK Nyoma as an Aadhaar service centre for local residents

Local representatives and officials praised the KVK team for delivering services in remote areas like Tsaga, located at over 15,000 feet.

Strengthening Agriculture in Ladakh

The visit concluded with a renewed commitment from the University to enhance extension services, innovation, and farmer support in Ladakh’s challenging terrain.
