Ladakh Introduces Traditional Uniform for Drivers, Launches Vehicle Branding Initiative to Boost Tourism

Date:

Leh, April 2026: Following the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Union Territory of Ladakh has introduced a traditional uniform for commercial drivers and launched a vehicle branding initiative to enhance the overall tourist experience.

Traditional Attire Made Mandatory for Drivers

Under the new directive, all commercial drivers across Ladakh—including taxis, buses, and transport vehicles—are required to wear traditional Ladakhi attire such as the ‘goncha’ while on duty.

The move aims to:

  • Promote Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage
  • Create a unique and immersive experience for tourists
  • Encourage pride in local traditions among service providers

Boost to Cultural Tourism

Officials said the initiative is designed to strengthen Ladakh’s identity as a culturally vibrant destination, where visitors can experience local traditions firsthand.

The decision followed consultations with tourism stakeholders, including hotel associations and tour operators, highlighting the importance of integrating culture with tourism services.

Vehicle Branding Initiative Flagged Off

Alongside the uniform policy, the Lieutenant Governor also flagged off a vehicle branding campaign, under which commercial vehicles will feature tourism-related visuals and identity elements.

This initiative is expected to:

  • Improve the visual appeal of tourist transport
  • Promote Ladakh’s destinations and culture
  • Create a more organized and professional tourism ecosystem

Enhancing Tourist Experience

The combined efforts of traditional uniforms and branded vehicles aim to provide visitors with a distinct and memorable travel experience, blending hospitality with local identity.

Officials said that such measures will help position Ladakh as a premium cultural tourism destination.

Strengthening Local Economy

By aligning tourism services with local culture, the initiative is also expected to:

  • Support local livelihoods
  • Increase tourist engagement
  • Boost the region’s hospitality and travel sector

A Step Toward Cultural Preservation

The administration emphasised that the initiative is not just regulatory but a cultural movement, encouraging stakeholders to actively participate in preserving and showcasing Ladakh’s heritage.
