Horticulture Programme by KVK Nyoma, UoL Held at Model Apple Orchard in Changthang

Date:

Ladakh: In a significant step towards strengthening horticulture in high-altitude cold desert regions, a successful horticulture development programme was conducted at the Model Apple Orchard in Himya Rong, Changthang, jointly organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Nyoma and the University of Ladakh (UoL). The initiative focused on improving fruit production techniques and promoting sustainable orchard management in the challenging climatic conditions of Ladakh.

The programme witnessed active participation from farmers, orchard owners, and agricultural experts, who were guided on modern horticulture practices suitable for extreme weather conditions. Officials highlighted that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance fruit cultivation, especially apple production, in high-altitude regions of Changthang where agricultural opportunities remain limited due to harsh terrain and climatic constraints.

According to details from the programme, experts from KVK Nyoma and UoL provided on-site technical demonstrations at the model orchard, focusing on scientific orchard management, pruning techniques, nutrient management, and pest control measures. Farmers were also trained on improving soil fertility, irrigation efficiency, and plant health monitoring, which are critical for ensuring higher productivity in cold desert conditions.

A key focus of the programme was the promotion of high-density plantation methods and improved apple varieties, which are better suited to withstand low temperatures and limited water availability. Experts explained how adopting scientific horticulture practices can significantly enhance yield and improve fruit quality, thereby increasing farmers’ income in the region.

Officials from KVK Nyoma emphasized that Himya Rong and surrounding areas in Changthang have strong potential for horticulture-based livelihood diversification, particularly through apple orchards and other temperate fruit cultivation. They noted that model orchards like the one in Himya serve as live demonstration sites, helping farmers learn advanced techniques through practical exposure rather than theoretical training alone.

The programme also included an interactive farmer–scientist session, where local farmers shared their challenges, including issues related to frost damage, water scarcity, and soil limitations. Experts responded with practical solutions such as protective cultivation methods, mulching techniques, and efficient water management strategies, tailored specifically for high-altitude farming conditions.

KVK Nyoma officials reiterated that such initiatives are part of broader efforts under agricultural extension programmes aimed at strengthening climate-resilient farming systems in Ladakh. The collaboration with the University of Ladakh is expected to further enhance research-based interventions and ensure that scientific knowledge reaches farmers at the grassroots level.

The programme also stressed the importance of adopting sustainable and organic farming practices, which are increasingly relevant in ecologically sensitive regions like Changthang. Farmers were encouraged to reduce dependency on chemical inputs and focus on natural soil enrichment methods and eco-friendly pest management techniques.

Participants appreciated the initiative, noting that hands-on training at the model orchard provided valuable insights into improving orchard productivity. Many farmers expressed confidence that the adoption of these techniques could help transform horticulture into a more reliable and profitable livelihood option in the region.

Overall, the horticulture development programme at Himya Rong Model Apple Orchard marked an important step toward promoting scientific fruit cultivation in Ladakh’s Changthang region, reinforcing the role of KVK Nyoma and UoL in driving sustainable agricultural transformation in high-altitude areas.
