Varanasi Set for Major Infra Boost as PM Modi to Launch Projects Worth ₹6,270 Crore

Date:

Lucknow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Varanasi on April 28 to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth ₹6,270 crore, marking another major infrastructure push for his parliamentary constituency. The large-scale announcement is expected to cover multiple sectors, including urban development, connectivity, public utilities, and civic infrastructure upgrades, aimed at transforming the temple city into a modern urban hub.

According to official details, the upcoming projects will be unveiled during PM Modi’s visit to Kashi, where he will interact with local stakeholders and highlight the government’s continued focus on accelerating development in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The ₹6,270 crore package is part of a series of high-value investments being channelled into Varanasi over the past several years to strengthen infrastructure and improve the quality of life for residents.

The projects scheduled for launch include a mix of inauguration of completed works and foundation stone laying for new developments, spanning key sectors such as road connectivity, urban transport, water supply, sanitation, and public amenities. Officials indicate that several of these initiatives are designed to reduce congestion, improve mobility, and enhance basic infrastructure across both urban and semi-urban areas of the city.

Varanasi, one of India’s oldest living cities, has been witnessing rapid transformation under various central government schemes, including smart city development initiatives and heritage revitalisation projects. The upcoming announcement is expected to further accelerate this momentum, particularly in areas linked to tourism infrastructure and civic modernization.

A significant portion of the ₹6,270 crore investment is expected to focus on improving transport connectivity and urban infrastructure, including better road networks, upgraded public transport systems, and enhanced last-mile connectivity solutions. The aim is to ensure smoother movement within the city, which sees high daily footfall due to its religious and cultural importance.

Additionally, water supply and sewage management systems are also likely to receive upgrades, addressing long-standing civic challenges in rapidly expanding urban pockets. The projects are expected to improve sanitation standards and support sustainable urban growth in the region.Officials also noted that several initiatives will align with the broader vision of making Varanasi a modern, well-connected, and globally recognised heritage city, balancing development with cultural preservation.

Varanasi has been a focal point of large-scale infrastructure investment since 2014, with multiple rounds of development projects launched over the years. The upcoming ₹6,270 crore package adds to this ongoing transformation, reinforcing the government’s emphasis on upgrading infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Over the years, the city has seen major changes including improved road networks, development of ghats, modernization of public facilities, and expansion of tourism-related infrastructure. The April 28 visit is expected to further strengthen these efforts with new projects aimed at long-term urban development.

The upcoming launch is being seen as a key step in accelerating Varanasi’s transformation into a high-functioning urban and cultural hub, combining heritage preservation with modern infrastructure development. With large-scale investments planned across multiple sectors, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities, improve public services, and enhance overall urban livability.
