Ladakh Moves Towards Full District Setup with DC and SP Appointments Approved

Date:

Leh (Ladakh): In a key administrative development aimed at strengthening governance in the newly created districts of Ladakh, the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) has approved the appointment of Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) for the five newly formed districts. The decision comes immediately after the formal notification of the districts, ensuring that full-fledged administrative and law-and-order machinery is put in place without delay.

According to the official order, the newly appointed officers will head the districts of Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass, which were recently carved out as part of Ladakh’s major administrative restructuring. With this move, the Union Territory now has seven districts in total, compared to the earlier two—Leh and Kargil.

Officials said the appointments are aimed at ensuring immediate operationalisation of district-level governance, allowing administrative services to reach people in remote and high-altitude areas more efficiently. The L-G has directed the officers to assume charge without delay and work with full commitment to address local developmental needs and public service delivery gaps.

The administration emphasized that this step is part of a broader vision to bring “governance closer to the people”, particularly in Ladakh’s geographically challenging terrain where residents often face difficulties accessing administrative offices located far away. The creation of dedicated DC and SP offices in each district is expected to significantly improve law and order management, development execution, and grievance redressal systems.

Officials further noted that the remaining subordinate posts and supporting administrative infrastructure will also be filled on priority to ensure smooth functioning of all newly created districts. This includes staffing requirements, office setup, and logistical arrangements necessary for effective governance at the grassroots level.

The L-G has also highlighted that decentralisation through new districts will help in faster decision-making, improved service delivery, and better monitoring of developmental schemes, especially in sectors like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and tourism.

The move has been widely viewed as part of Ladakh’s ongoing administrative transformation since it became a Union Territory in 2019. In recent months, the region has witnessed several reforms aimed at strengthening local administration, expanding opportunities, and improving governance efficiency in remote areas.

With DCs and SPs now appointed, officials believe that the new districts will quickly transition from notification to fully functional administrative units, enabling direct implementation of government schemes and closer coordination with local communities.

Overall, the decision marks a significant milestone in Ladakh’s governance restructuring, reinforcing the administration’s focus on decentralisation, accessibility, and accelerated development in far-flung regions.
