Gurgaon set for temperature drop as IMD forecasts rain and thunderstorms from May 2

Date:

Haryana: A significant shift in weather conditions is expected in Gurgaon from May 2, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and a sharp dip in temperatures following a sustained spell of intense heat across the Delhi-NCR region. The change is being driven by an active western disturbance over northwest India, which is expected to trigger unstable atmospheric conditions over several days. The development is likely to bring temporary relief from rising summer heat but may also lead to localized disruptions in daily life.

According to the IMD, Gurgaon is expected to witness partly cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers between May 2 and May 6, along with lightning activity and surface winds that may strengthen during storm periods. Daytime temperatures, which had recently been hovering around 39–40°C, are likely to fall into the mid-30°C range during peak rainfall days, before gradually rising again once the system weakens. The department has indicated that weather conditions may vary across Delhi-NCR, with some areas experiencing more intense storm activity than others.

Meteorological officials have attributed this shift to a western disturbance, a seasonal weather system that brings moisture from the Mediterranean region into northern India. When combined with high surface temperatures typical of May, these systems often lead to pre-monsoon thunderstorms, dust storms, and short-duration heavy rainfall events. Such conditions are common during the transitional phase between spring and summer in north India, when atmospheric instability tends to increase.

In Gurgaon and surrounding areas, such weather systems often result in sudden changes in wind speed and direction, locally referred to as “andhi” conditions, followed by brief but intense rainfall. Climate experts note that these events are part of the broader pre-monsoon cycle, which typically peaks in May and early June before the arrival of the southwest monsoon.

The IMD has stated that night temperatures are expected to remain relatively comfortable, settling in the mid-20°C range, while daytime heat will be moderated by cloud cover and rainfall activity. However, officials have also warned that thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong winds and lightning, which can pose risks in open areas and during outdoor activities.

Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution during storm periods, particularly in the evening and night hours when thunderstorm activity is more likely. Possible impacts include traffic disruptions, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and temporary power outages, especially if rainfall intensity increases. Construction sites, outdoor installations, and temporary structures may also be vulnerable to gusty winds.

Commuters have been urged to plan travel with weather conditions in mind and avoid unnecessary movement during active storm phases. Emergency services and municipal agencies are expected to remain on alert to address weather-related incidents.

The IMD’s broader outlook suggests that unstable weather conditions may continue through the first week of May, after which temperatures are likely to rise again as the western disturbance weakens. However, meteorologists caution that early May typically remains a volatile period in northern India, with alternating spells of heat and pre-monsoon weather activity.

The current forecast for Gurgaon aligns with wider regional patterns, as parts of north and northwest India are expected to experience mixed weather conditions, including heatwaves in some areas and pre-monsoon rainfall in others, reflecting ongoing seasonal transition dynamics.
