Kargil: Mr. Tushar Anand (IAS), Director of the National Health Mission (NHM) Ladakh, visited several hospitals in Kargil district on May 21, 2026. He thoroughly inspected the Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in Panikar and Karsha, and the Community Health Center (CHC) in Sanku. The primary purpose of the visit was to improve health services in villages, assess the condition of the hospitals, and assess the availability of doctors and staff.
During the visit, the Mission Director reviewed patient care, the availability of essential medicines, the functioning of the outpatient department (OPD), and the overall system at each center. He also spoke with the doctors and nurses on duty and learned about the daily challenges faced by healthcare workers working in these remote and high-altitude areas.
Officials accompanying the inspection noted that the visit was part of NHM Ladakh’s broader strategy to ensure accessible, quality, and timely healthcare services in rural and far-flung regions of the Union Territory. Special attention was given to strengthening grassroots-level institutions, which form the backbone of primary healthcare in the region.
At each centre, Shri Tushar Anand reviewed staffing patterns, patient inflow management, and essential healthcare infrastructure, and took stock of service readiness, particularly in emergency response and maternal and child healthcare services. He also evaluated the implementation of various centrally sponsored health schemes being executed at the ground level.
Healthcare personnel were encouraged to maintain high standards of service delivery and ensure that patients receive timely and efficient medical attention. The Mission Director reportedly stressed the importance of discipline, accountability, and patient-centric care, especially in remote health facilities where accessibility remains a challenge.
The inspection also included discussions on improving logistical support, strengthening referral systems, and enhancing coordination between PHCs, CHCs, and district hospitals to reduce delays in critical care services.
According to officials, surprise inspections are often conducted to check the functioning of hospitals and health centers. The main purpose is to ensure that everything is running smoothly and that those in need can access the full benefits of government-run health programs without any hassles.
The main conclusion of the visit was that health officials were directed to rectify deficiencies and improve healthcare services in Kargil. The government’s goal is to ensure equal and quality treatment for everyone living in remote areas of Ladakh.
