As part of the nationwide celebration of “Janjatiya Garima Utsav”, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs will organize a special interactive meeting of the Hon’ble President of India with the beneficiaries of the flagship Central Sector Scholarship Schemes of the Ministry.
The dialogue is being organised during the “Birsa Lives in New Bharat Week”, which is being observed from 25th May to 2nd June 2026 to commemorate the inspiring legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda – an epitome of courage, social awakening and unwavering commitment to the nation. The “Janjatiya Garima Utsav” to be celebrated from 10th May to 9th June 2026 honours the rich heritage, cultural legacy and invaluable contribution of tribal communities in India’s nation building journey, and inspires tribal youth to take up education, leadership, innovation and active participation in the vision of a developed India envisioned by the Hon’ble Prime Minister.
Approximately 200 tribal students from across the country, beneficiaries of the Ministry’s scholarship schemes, will participate in the interaction with the Honorable President. These students are some of the brightest young people from tribal communities who are striving to excel in higher education, advanced research, and international academic pursuits. Such interactions will send a strong and positive message about the Government’s unwavering commitment towards empowerment, social inclusion and nation building in the field of education, thereby realizing the goals of Developed India 2047.
The participating students receive benefits from the schemes listed below:
- National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme for ST Students
- National Fellowship for Scheduled Tribes (NFST)
- National Scholarship Scheme for Higher Education of ST Students
The National Fellowship for Scheduled Tribes (NFST) is a fully funded Central Sector Scheme that provides support to meritorious Scheduled Tribe students pursuing PhD programs in India. 750 new fellowships are awarded annually, and approximately 3,000 students are currently benefiting from the scheme.
The National Scholarship Scheme for Higher Education provides support to Scheduled Tribe (ST) students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies at 265 premier institutions in fields such as engineering, medicine, law, management, and information technology. Approximately 2,500 new scholarships are awarded annually, while approximately 7,000 students are currently benefiting from the scheme.
The National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme enables meritorious Scheduled Tribe (ST) students to pursue higher education at globally renowned universities abroad. Implemented in coordination with Indian embassies abroad, the scheme offers 20 new awards annually. Currently, approximately 70 students are studying at leading international institutions under this scheme.
This special dialogue aims to encourage tribal students to pursue academic excellence, leadership and innovation, while reinforcing the Government’s commitment to inclusive and transformative tribal empowerment. (PIB)
