Cabinet Approves ₹1,677 Crore Expansion of Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport

New Delhi/Srinagar: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the major expansion of the civil enclave at Srinagar International Airport at an estimated cost of ₹1,677 crore.

The decision is expected to significantly strengthen aviation infrastructure and enhance regional connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir.

Project Scope and Infrastructure Development

Located about 12 km from Srinagar city, the airport operates under the Indian Air Force’s Budgam Airbase, while civil operations are managed by the Airports Authority of India.

The approved project includes construction of new barracks for security personnel along with major structural upgrades to the civil enclave.

State-of-the-Art Terminal with Higher Passenger Capacity

The new civil enclave will be developed over 73.18 acres and will feature a modern terminal building covering 71,500 square metres, including the existing 20,659 square metre structure.

The upgraded terminal is designed to:

  • Handle 2,900 passengers during peak hours
  • Cater to up to 10 million passengers annually

This expansion aims to accommodate the rising air traffic demand in the region.

Expanded Apron and Parking Facilities

The project includes the development of 15 aircraft parking bays, including space for one wide-body (Code E) aircraft. The 3,658 metre x 45 metre runway will continue to be operated by the Indian Air Force.

Additionally, a multi-level car parking facility with a capacity of 1,000 vehicles will be constructed to improve passenger convenience.

Blending Modern Design with Kashmiri Heritage

The new terminal will integrate contemporary architecture with Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage. Traditional wooden craftsmanship and local design elements will be incorporated into the structure.

Enhanced passenger processing areas, spacious lounges, and advanced security and check-in systems will further strengthen operational efficiency.

Eco-Friendly and Energy-Efficient Infrastructure

The expansion project emphasizes sustainability, including:

  • Rainwater harvesting systems
  • Maximum use of natural lighting
  • Environment-friendly local construction materials

The terminal aims to achieve a 5-star GRIHA rating, reflecting its commitment to green building standards.

Boost to Tourism and Regional Economy

The upgraded airport infrastructure is expected to improve access to major tourist attractions such as Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and the Mughal Gardens.

The project is likely to generate employment opportunities, attract investment, and accelerate regional economic growth.

The development of the new civil enclave marks a transformative step toward world-class aviation infrastructure in Kashmir, enhancing connectivity while showcasing the region’s cultural and natural heritage on a global stage.
