Khaltsi, Ladakh: Government Degree College Khaltsi successfully organized an enrollment drive in collaboration with the Village Education Committee (VEC), LBA Sham Region, and the Nambardar Goba Association, aiming to increase student admissions and promote higher education in the region.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Principal Dr Sameena Iqbal and was attended by Bhanu Prabha, Secretary, Higher Education, UT Ladakh, along with officials, parents, and students from Higher Secondary School Khaltsi.
Focus on Expanding Educational Opportunities
The event began with a welcome address by Assistant Professor Stanzin Stamdin, who highlighted the college’s history, infrastructure, and academic offerings. He also announced the introduction of the Science stream from the current academic session, while addressing challenges related to declining student enrollment.
Community Leaders Stress Importance of Local Education
Representatives from the Nambardar Association and the Village Education Committee appreciated the government’s efforts in bringing higher education closer to rural communities. They encouraged parents to spread awareness and enroll their children locally, emphasizing the benefits of accessible education.
The Vice President of the LBA Women’s Wing highlighted the role of women in society, citing examples like Dr Sameena Iqbal and Bhanu Prabha as inspiring figures, and urged families to make use of available educational opportunities.
Newsletter Launch and Felicitation Ceremony
During the programme:
- The Secretary was felicitated with traditional khataks
- The college’s annual newsletter “Ser Gyi Mayon” was officially launched
Secretary Raises Concern Over Declining Enrollment
In her keynote address, Bhanu Prabha underscored the significant government investment in sustaining institutions in remote regions like Ladakh. She expressed concern over declining enrollment and warned that such institutions could face closure without adequate community support.
She urged parents to:
- Enroll children in local colleges
- Avoid unnecessary educational migration
- Recognize the financial and social challenges of studying outside
She also interacted with faculty and students, taking note of their suggestions and concerns.
Programme Concludes with Vote of Thanks
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Professor Wangchuk Dorjey, who appreciated the Secretary’s commitment to strengthening education in Ladakh and thanked all stakeholders for their participation.
