Leh, April 23: The concluding day of the 8th Poshan Pakhwada was observed at Shenam Hall, Skara, Leh, with a strong focus on nutrition awareness, early childhood care, and the overall development of children during their formative years. The programme was organized under POSHAN Abhiyaan with the theme “Maximizing Brain Development in the First 6 Years of Life,” highlighting the importance of balanced nutrition, early stimulation, play-based learning, and reducing excessive screen exposure among young children.
The event aimed to strengthen awareness among families and communities about practices that support healthy growth and cognitive development in children. It brought together officials, Anganwadi workers, educators, counsellors, and community members to discuss ways to improve child welfare and nutrition services in the district.
The programme began with a welcome address by Zarina Bano, CDPO Leh, followed by a session on the outcomes and community feedback from Poshan Pakhwada presented by Tsewang Dolma, Supervisor of ICDS Project Durbuk. Their presentations highlighted the need for stronger community participation in ensuring better nutrition and healthy development for children in the early years.
A special skit on minimizing screen time was performed by Anganwadi Workers of Leh Project, creating awareness about the harmful effects of excessive screen exposure on young children. The performance emphasized how reduced screen time and increased family interaction can positively influence a child’s emotional and mental development.
Ms. Tsering Yangdol, Head of Department at DIET Leh, delivered a lecture on Early Childhood Care and Education, stressing the importance of early learning and child-friendly teaching methods. The programme also included a vibrant dance performance by Anganwadi workers, reflecting active community involvement and support for the campaign.
Another important session was conducted by Ms. Chonyit Dolma, Counsellor and Early Interventionist at DEIC SNM Hospital. She spoke in detail about early childhood stimulation for optimal brain development in children aged 0–3 years. She also explained the adverse effects of excessive screen exposure during the early years and shared practical strategies for reducing screen dependency among children.
The event further featured rhymes performed by children from various Anganwadi Centres, reinforcing the importance of play-based learning in early childhood development. Their participation added a joyful and engaging element to the programme.
Ms. Kunzes Angmo, JKAS, Director of the Social and Tribal Welfare Department, addressed the gathering and shared valuable remarks on strengthening nutrition initiatives and improving Anganwadi services across the region. She emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure better outcomes for children and mothers.
The programme concluded with the distribution of Vidyarambh Certificates and felicitation of Anganwadi Workers for their dedicated service toward child welfare and community development. District Programme Officer ICDS Leh, Rigzin Spalgon, delivered the vote of thanks and appreciated the collective efforts of all stakeholders in making the campaign successful.
