India Hosts Crucial Quad Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue in New Delhi

Date:

India will host a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Quad nations in New Delhi today. During this meeting, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will welcome Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, the Foreign Minister of Japan, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Several key issues under the Quad framework are expected to be discussed during the meeting.

Regional and Global Issues

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the meeting is expected to cover regional and global issues—such as strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, maritime security, critical minerals, emerging technologies, bolstering supply chains, and the situation in West Asia and Ukraine.

An official statement noted, “Under the Quad’s vision of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific,’ the Ministers will carry forward the discussions held in Washington D.C. on July 1, 2025. They will aim to enhance Quad cooperation in priority areas, review the progress of ongoing initiatives, and exchange views on the Indo-Pacific region as well as other international issues.”

Various Issues Will Be Discussed

The meeting will place special emphasis on areas such as maritime security, resilient supply chains, infrastructure development, critical and emerging technologies, climate action, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. Furthermore, ongoing Quad initiatives aimed at strengthening regional stability and economic growth will also be reviewed.

Bilateral Talks

During their visit to India, the Foreign Ministers of Australia and Japan, as well as the US Secretary of State, are also likely to hold bilateral meetings with S. Jaishankar. Earlier on Monday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi ahead of the Quad meeting scheduled for Tuesday.

During this interaction, he stated that the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan is anchored in their shared vision of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific.’

During the meeting, S. Jaishankar remarked, “India and Japan share a Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Our relationship holds immense significance and has a wide-ranging impact. The Quad meeting taking place on Tuesday will serve as an illustration of this, where we will discuss advancing the vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”

India-Japan Talks

During his visit to New Delhi, the Japanese Foreign Minister is also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, alongside the other visiting ministers.

This Quad meeting is taking place at a time when the geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific region is constantly evolving, and member nations are striving to enhance cooperation to address shared regional and global challenges.

According to reports, the Quad nations may announce new initiatives aimed at strengthening economic security and technological partnerships. Earlier on Sunday, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio stated that India and the United States are strategically aligned on several critical global issues. These include matters such as critical minerals, supply chains, and terrorism. He described India as “one of the most important strategic partners in the world” for the United States.

Addressing a joint press conference alongside External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio noted that both India and the United States have suffered at the hands of global terrorist networks. He added that, as democratic nations, both countries understand the importance of accountability and transparency toward their citizens.

Rubio remarked, “I have to explain to the American people the rationale behind every decision—why it serves our national interest—and the President must do the same. Similarly, in India, leaders must explain to the public why their stance on a partnership with the U.S., or on any other issue, aligns with the country’s national interest. I believe this holds true, to some extent, for every nation in the world; however, in democratic countries, it assumes even greater significance.”
